Good News Story: LaMettry’s Collision Glass, and More!
Have you heard of LaMettry’s Collision? Often referred to as an industry leader with 13 locations in Minneapolis, St. Paul and the surrounding metropolitan area, LaMettry’s excels as a professional Certified Collision Repair Provider that focuses on quality and technology. Amongst their many locations, LaMettry’s has 10 collision shops and, since 2012, has added 3 locations solely focused on mechanical repairs. LaMettry’s employs around 300 staff and technicians, and services about 1000 cars monthly. While Rick LaMettry opened the collision repair shop in the mid 1970’s, his wife, Joanne LaMettry, began managing the daily operations and is now the company’s CEO. Their sons, Justin and Randy LaMettry, are Vice Presidents, making LaMettry’s a genuine family endeavor. LaMettry’s company vision is to adapt to all industry conditions and evolve accordingly. At each of their body shop locations, they embrace new technology; including ADAS, calibrations, and the newest highly technological work.
We spoke with Darrell Amberson, President of Operations for LaMettry’s, to find out about the company’s venture into mechanical repair, in addition to collision repair. Darrell shared helpful details about why shops should be certified and how LaMettry’s has continued to expand and manage the changes that COVID-19 brought to all of us.
Darrell Amberson President of Operations LaMettry’s Collision
Darrell believes that LaMettry’s leads the collision and automotive repair industry with a commitment to the finest workmanship possible. In addition to LaMettry’s superior service, their staff treats all people and vehicles with the utmost respect. Darrell has been with LaMettry’s for 8 years and in the automotive industry for over 40 years— mostly as a body shop manager or president. He managed MSOs for over 20 years and is – or has been – the chairman for ASA, NACE, AMi, and on many committees, such as CIC. While he and his wife now live on an organic farm spanning 80 acres, in his youth he was involved in motorsports. He, briefly, left the collision care industry to race cars in Southern California and across North America. His drag race of choice? A Nitro Funny Car.
Nitro Funny Car
In order to keep LaMettry’s staff and customers safe and comfortable during the pandemic, their management team made accommodations, “We agreed that each person in management would take charge of one shop or region, to reduce travel and direct contact with others.” Darrell is directly responsible for 3 shops within a block radius of one another— LaMettry’s Calibration Center, Collision Repair Center, and a retail Mechanical Center.
“Between all of our collision shops, LaMettry’s is Certified by almost every manufacturer. We embrace shop certifications by vehicle manufacturers and it has become a major component in our business model. Our Certifications enable us to have access to the latest repair information and technology, which drives us to produce a higher level of quality.”
Darrell further expands on those benefits, “Other shops have to seek out the information to repair a vehicle correctly. When you’re certified, your shop is the first to receive the most up-to-date technical information and we also receive OEM training.”
As a leader in their community, customers find LaMettry’s through a number of methods… including word of mouth, referral, online searches, and through advertisements. However, Darrell has discovered a clear winner, “We know that more and more customers are choosing us due to our shop certifications or hearing about us through dealerships, social media, and friends and family.” LaMettry’s uses a Customer Satisfaction Index (CSI) service which rates customer feedback and tracks results. LaMettry’s promotes their certifications on their website and in a televised ad staring the company’s own Justin and Randy LaMettry!
Joanne, Valisity, Randy, and Justin LaMettry
With his 4 decades of experience, Darrell’s advice is worth its weight in gold. For new shops, he recommends, “Look at your marketplace and understand what brands are most prominent. Consider certification for the brands that are popular in your area. Certification is not for everyone, as some shops have a different business model or offer lower cost repairs.”
LaMettry’s business prowess remains strong, despite the many changes the country has faced. Their state has been opened at 3/4th of its normal capabilities and Darrell had to become an expert on how to operate an essential business and meet customer demand, “We have learned a lot. As we remained open, we were very accommodating with team members that had concerns. We studied CDC guidelines and implemented our new best practices.” LaMettry’s now relies on online photo estimating and appointments, as well curbside service. Masks are required for employees who work with the public or vendors.
Specifically, “The front door to our body shops is locked and customers ring a bell or call. We complete in-person transactions or estimates outside, and our employees wear a mask. We take the temperature of all employees with touchless thermometers, and it has gone smoothly. We have implemented frequent cleaning and hand sanitizing. We cleanse every vehicle, before and after the repair, and use a new steering wheel cover, during and after the repair. We’ve acclimated to these methods.”
Darrell believes that society has learned a lot and that businesses have to do the same. Every LaMettry’s employee wears disposable gloves, when working on cars, and fresh gloves for every vehicle.
He has also been struck by the response from their customers, “People sought us out as an essential business and supported us. While nurses and doctors are critical, we take our role of helping people stay mobile and get where they need to go very seriously. We want to help our society maintain their mobility and let people continue their lives.”
In the future, Darrell sees the strength of LaMettry’s continuing. “We intend to perform better and continue to grow our business and be more effective than ever!”

Are Virtual Changes Here to Stay?
The amazing thing about technology is how quickly it can transform the way we live, work, and think. No one encounters this phenomenon more than Certified Collision Repair Providers. One question that many body shops are asking, since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, is whether their standard of practice has changed, for good. Specifically, does the massive increase in shops relying on remote photo estimates or drop-off and delivery practices mean that virtual additions are now the gold standard? We spoke to several industry leaders about their perspective on these new, yet widespread, changes.
As essential businesses, Certified Collision Repair Providers were among the first to adapt to virtual tools during the pandemic.
Certified Collision Repair Providers within the Assured Performance Network have always stayed up-to-date with technology— from following manufacturer protocols, to improved tools and techniques. While in-person customer service has often been seen as a strength within each community, demand for virtual services changed overnight when states switched to “Stay at Home” orders. Body Shops had to create a working system that met customer demand. Now, even as states begin to reopen and loosen restrictions, Certified Collision Repair Providers continue to look for improvements to how they operate. These positive changes include using platforms such as the Assured Performance Certified Repair Option (CRO), BodyShop Booster, or photo estimate platforms like CCC Engage.
Ryan Taylor, CEO of BodyShop Booster, (www.bodyshopbooster.com) is one leader helping Certified Collision Repair Providers have easy access to the technology they’re now relying on. “COVID-19 changed our world forever and shops have had to adapt, to remain successful. The post COVID-customer wants to be dealt with virtually and shops must have the tools to communicate with that customer.”
According to Ryan, “Shops woke up overnight and realized that they need the ability to deal with customers virtually. The faster body shops respond to a customer, the more likely they are to be the collision shop that customer chooses. We all know an accident is a traumatic event… and people expect 24/7 communication from body shops, just as they have with their insurance companies.”
While that paradigm can sound dire to those of us adjusting from in-person services to virtual communication, Scott Biggs, the CEO of Assured Performance, views new technology as a positive customer service addition.
Scott Biggs CEO Assured Performance
“Collision repair using virtual services is done at the speed of life, the way people want it to be. Offering pick-up and drop-off services has changed the act of coordinating collision repair from a major catastrophe to a relatively minor inconvenience. It allows shops to show their partnership with their customers and the insurance companies.”
Patrick Porter, Regional Director at Assured Performance, is a former body shop owner and manager who also regards the convenience of digital service or pick-up and delivery options as a great addition, “The theory that everyone has to go to a body shop to drop off their vehicle has now been proven to be a fallacy. We have shown customers a better way, where they can have their car picked-up and delivered. They trust the repair as Certified Collision Repair Providers can now produce a Certificate for each documented repair.”
How are shops (virtually) selling their services to customers, if each customer is contacting 3-4 shops at a time?
Another aspect for shops to consider is the marketing and sales aspect of their virtual communication. Ryan Taylor feels that virtual estimates must be part of an overall sales experience, “Unlike other programs, BodyShop Booster has an extensive amount of communication tools— including A.I. software that will answer phone calls and text customers around the clock. We have the ability to get towing services sent straight to the scene of an accident, along with virtual photo estimates and scheduling in-person estimates. There’s no way for a human to have that constant availability.”
How have your customers reacted to your business offering Certified Repairs through the Certified Repair Option (CRO). What about your use of virtual tools or drop-off and delivery services? Do you plan to continuing offering these tools in the longterm? Let us know about any changes to how your body shop operates or unique developments you’d like to see featured in our blog! Crash Champions Merges With Pacific Elite Collision Centers to Acquire 23 Locations!
Assured Performance had the opportunity to interview Crash Champions’ Director of Marketing, Natalie Zajc, and find out about the company’s plans since their recent March, 2020 merger with Pacific Elite Collision Centers in the Southern California area. This merger makes Crash Collision one of the fastest growing MSO’s in the country, with a notable presence in several large metropolitan areas— including California, Ohio, and Chicago.
Natalie Zajc Director of Marketing Crash Champions
The acquisition of these 23 Pacific Elite Collision Centers has brought Crash Champions’ total collision center count from 16 to 39 locations across the United States. These newly acquired locations will continue the company’s mission to bring high quality repairs to every community while emphasizing the importance of OEM certified repair centers. The Crash Champions’ national corporate headquarters will remain in Crestwood, Illinois, with the headquarters for their Californian market in Downey, California.
While many of the acquired Pacific Elite Collision Centers already have some Assured Performance certifications, we asked Natalie about their additional locations. She explained, “One standard that Crash Champions plans to continue for our Los Angeles and Orange County markets is adding additional manufacturer certifications through the Assured Performance platform. As an organization, we truly see the long-term value in OE Certifications and have committed ourselves to having the most highly trained collision repair technicians nationally. Not only do our Crash Collision locations have state-of-the-art equipment and facilities, but we strive to provide our teams with the best training, technology, and tooling in the industry.” Crash Champions also plans to offer consumers fully documented repairs through the Certified Repair Option (CRO), found within Assured Performance, in the future.
This milestone for the company was facilitated through their partnership with A&M Capital, a middle market private equity fund that invested in Pacific Elite, this year, and Crash Champions in July of 2019. Both organizations were similar in corporate culture, structure, size, and overall mission.
History of the Company:
Crash Champions began in 1999 as a small collision repair facility called New Lenox Auto Body, in New Lenox, Illinois. In 2014, after a partnership buyout, Matt Ebert, President and CEO, rebranded New Lenox Auto Body to Crash Champions and the organization began to grow. Throughout the next six years, Crash Champions grew to 13 Chicagoland locations and 3 locations in Columbus, OH. Their recent merger makes it clear that the sky is the limit for the MSO!

What sets Hampden Auto Body in Englewood Colorado apart from other body shops? Their Better Business Bureau Accredited status and their Certifications with Assured Performance, FCA, Nissan, INFINITI, Hyundai, Kia, Repair Capable – Ford, and Repair Capable – Aluminum. Situated in the middle of Denver’s metropolitan area, the collision shop is fortunate to service around 80 vehicles a month and their expertise has always attracted a strong fan base of committed staff and customers. Their facility serves customers and dealerships in the surrounding suburbs, while their certifications have led them to be a Certified Repair Center of choice, for vehicles throughout Colorado. Hampden Auto Body’s positive reputation doesn’t stop there— they are also a destination body shop for customers from other states! Their motto, “Our Business is Helping People!” guides the entire staff in their day-to-day operations and enforces their work ethic.
What does Hampden Auto Body credit for the loyalty of their customers? Quality repairs and consistent, standout work! They were one of the first shops in Colorado to receive INFINITI and Nissan Certifications in 2012. Assured Performance recently had the opportunity to connect with co-owner, Mike Ross, and his wife, Emy Ross, to find out more about how their shop stays grounded and successful.
The History of Hampden Auto Body
Hampden Auto Body was founded in 1983, after Dan and Mary Ann Ross purchased a former repair shop building. They were motivated to start their own business because of Dan’s interest in fixing automobiles. More than an interest— creating his own collision shop with a focus on safe, top-of-the-line quality repairs was his passion. Mary Ann managed the company through her business savvy and financial management skills. The combination of their talents allowed them to establish a successful, viable business that became a town favorite. However, as any business owner can attest, success requires hard work, dedication, and sacrifice.
Fast-forwarding to the year 2020, Hampden Auto Body has adapted to the changes that technology and COVID-19 have brought us all. The collision shop employs about 15 employees and specializes in late model, heavy collision repairs. While Dan and MaryAnn are now enjoying retirement, they are still active in the business. The shop continues to be family owned and operated by their two sons, Mike and Adam Ross. Mike (co-owner) is the lead blue printer and has been overseeing the day-to-day operations for over 23 years. Adam (co-owner) is the shop’s long-time parts manager. Two other family members are also employed by Hampden’s— Brian Tokle, as the shop’s main estimator and G.M., alongside Mike’s spouse, Emy Ross, as the office manager. As Emy explains, “Being a family business requires that each team member wear many different hats and cross-train in enough areas to handle our busy workload. Brian also oversees production, parts, and sales… as well as relationships with dealership accounts. I oversee marketing, training, financials, and human resources.”
How The Shop Maximizes Their Certifications
While their Certified repair facility does attract out-of-town customers, their shop thrives due to their local community’s ongoing support of their business. The Certifications they have with top manufacturers attract attention and respect, which has resulted in their shop being a preferred auto body repair provider for the Denver metropolitan area. Their family is proud that it has been that way since the shop’s inception.
As Emy Ross explained, “We have invested a lot of time and money into creating a state-of-the-art auto body repair shop. In 2017, we completed our building expansion project, which doubled the size of our facility. We also upgraded and installed new equipment, including new custom Garmat paint booths and a Globaljig Super Rotax robust structural repair system.”
She adds, “Currently one of the biggest things that sets us apart from other body shops is that we also repair exotic vehicles and have the certifications to repair several high-end makes of vehicles.”
For Mike Ross, acting as both an owner and operator, the quality their shop provides is personal, “We provide services to help people— whether we can repair their vehicle or not. Sometimes the best assistance we can give is sharing our knowledge and experience to help customers make informed decisions. Safety has always been our top priority, when repairing vehicles, and we will only repair the vehicle per the manufacturer’s recommendations and guidelines.”
What Has the Shop Learned by Being Certified by So Many Manufacturers?
Mike Ross has never tired of learning new methods and surmounting challenges, “By becoming Certified to repair many different makes of vehicles, we have gained access to ever-evolving repair methods and techniques. This gives us the ability to replace parts and restore vehicles back to pre-accident condition, better than ever. The key to constant improvement relies on empowering our staff to communicate about each repair and make decisions based on this information.”
If keeping track of the many changes occurring yearly, within the automotive industry, sounds difficult… Mike Ross has it down to a science.
Mike explains, “We have a robust management platform that allows us to measure everything along the way, for each repair. That way, we can change and adapt to maintain a constant flow of production and use quality control checkpoints as part of each repair. We take pride in every repair we complete.”
Hampden Auto Body credits their team for the structure that holds them all together, as the entire shop strives for improvement and excellence.
Managing Industry Changes Due to COVID-19
When the pandemic struck, Hampden Auto Body was prepared. Their body shop’s focus has always been to engage in the highest ethical practices possible, for all areas of their business. They have always prioritized their credentials, OEM Certifications, innovation, education, and investment into the future of their facility. Upon realizing that they were considered an “essential business” and would continue to stay open, they immediately adapted to additional new, efficient safety procedures and protocols. Their safety measures have included following CDC guidelines, using electronic sign-in forms and repair authorizations, offering a touch-less experience (for drop off and pick up), coordinating appointment times (to prevent crowding), a key drop box, payment by phone, and a full system of sanitization for each customer’s vehicle (at drop-off and pick-up). Hampden Auto Body uses interior safe sanitizing disinfectant to clean keys, door handles, steering wheels, console, dash controls, seatbelts and seat, armrests, and anything else their technicians might come into contact with. They don’t stop there, they also use an airborne disinfectant agent in the entire vehicle interior, which is left for a minimum of 2 hours prior to the next step of the check-in process. Since they closed their front office, all estimates are performed online or outside the building. Their shop has been using an online estimate form for years and they’ve been able to promote and utilize this tool. Their employees social distance and wear a mask as they interact with customers and vendors.
If They Had to Get Certified Again, Would They?
Spoiler alert: YES!
In the words of Emy and Mike Ross, “We felt that certification was the future. The technological features and use of advanced steels and materials in new automobiles makes it critical that repairs meet the manufacturer’s high standards for fit and function… to ensure safety for all passengers and optimal vehicle performance.”

When people love what they do for a living, it shows… and Joanne Giorgetti is one of those people. To know Joanne is to recognize the passion that she has for her career at Assured Performance, her family, and helping others. If you’ve been lucky enough to have Joanne as your Assured Performance Account Manager, you’ve experienced her humor, vivaciousness, and positive attitude. Joanne sat down to discuss her nomination as our Assured Performance “Spotlight Team Member of the Month” and the surprising route she took toward a lifelong career in the Collision Care Industry.
Background:
As a California native, Joanne was born in San Francisco and now resides in Huntington Beach, California. She and her husband, John Giorgetti (Regional Director) both work for Assured Performance and two of her adult children work for an Assured Performance Certified Collision Center— Mission Viejo Auto Collision. While her job at Assured Performance and her interest in collision repair keep her professionally invigorated, during her personal time she loves visiting her grandchildren. She also travels to the Bay Area and frequents the wharf or enjoys shopping and fishing. An avid reader, her favorite books are – you guessed it – primarily about the Collision Care Industry!
What She Enjoys About Working With Collision Shops!
While Joanne has worked at Assured Performance for 7 years, her husband has worked alongside her for the last 5 years. The first question that friends or professional acquaintances usually ask her is less about the business of collision care and more about her husband. “People ask me, all the time, how we work together every day. It’s easy— we are a team and have been in the collision industry for over 37 years. Not only that, but more importantly, we like each other.”
John and Joanne Giorgetti
Joanne first met Scott Biggs, the CEO of Assured Performance, in 1999. She appreciates what his hard work, dedication, and emphasis on safe collision repair have done for the Industry. Her work at Assured Performance has become one of her crowning achievements. Her favorite Assured Performance phrase? “Certified Once, Recognized by Many”, which captures the benefits of the Certification process that she helps facilitate.
Joanne’s extensive automotive and collision repair experience started at Chick Iverson- Porsche Audi as an Office Manager. Later, she became an Assistant Manager at Sterling Motors-Rolls Royce BMW Body Shop, Newport Beach. She also worked at the corporate level for Southern California Collision Centers in Orange, where she trained all managerial staff. Her resume details her hard work for an assortment of well known corporate and privately owned body shops. For several years, she and her husband even owned a collision shop, JJ Collision Center in Murrieta. Her unique personal experience, especially as a former shop owner, connects her to the shops within our Network.
The close ties she has to the shops in the Assured Performance Network have caused the last few months to hit home. “At first, when we began hearing about the pandemic, there was so much uncertainty. Now, while so many have struggled and faced the fears that we all had, I am happy to see the shops in my region beginning to return fully staffed.”
What She Sees As The Future of Collision Care & Certifications
Joanne’s future goals are to help the shops she holds so dear continue their success. “The Industry is so cool. I’m always learning something new. One of my favorite parts of working at Assured Performance is the company’s ongoing vision and how we’ve managed to stay ahead of the curve by focusing on the future. We have ShopOps, marketing tools, and the Certified Repair Option (CRO). We also bring OEMs, body shops, and consumers together. Assured Performance even hosts multiple weekly webinars to ensure our shops stay plugged in and set up.”
While Joanne’s excitement surrounding her position as an Account Manager is evident, that enthusiasm ties into her personal philosophy and plans for the future, “I plan on sticking around to see what’s next for Assured Performance and our OEM partners. While some people fear change, I enjoy witnessing change and developments!”
Best part about working at Assured Performance:
“The opportunity to work with shops and our great relationships with our OEM partners, making and seeing the changes in the Industry growing into a great Community of Excellence!” – Joanne Giorgetti

What If You Already Have the Solution to More Repairs in Your Pocket?
As America reopens, traffic on the roads and highways is increasing and many body shops have begun welcoming a familiar amount of foot traffic into their facility. However, these unprecedented times have led many body shop owners to explore the best way to keep their business thriving and increase the number of cars they process over a month’s time. Thankfully, as a Certified Collision Center and Member of the Assured Performance Network, you have a secret weapon that other body shops do not:
The Certified Repair Option (CRO).
The newly launched Certified Repair Option (CRO) allows body shops to offer the safest documented repairs on the market. Officially released in 2020 and included in your Assured Performance membership, your Certified Shop has the ability to become one of the first in your community to offer customers a Certified Repair.
Stand out to your customers. Perform more repairs!
Offering a Certified Repair means that your body shop:
Ensures technicians are following OEM repair procedures through photographic evidence and documentation, along with providing proof of compliance.
Confirms pre and post scanning of every vehicle and stores valuable diagnostics.
Audit submissions by repair, line item, or labor category and approve or reassign based on the results.
Documents and prints a data driven Certificate of Authenticity, Compliance, or Certified Repair.
Use of RepairDoc is easy to adapt into your current practice and our Assured Performance Regional Directors offer personalized one-on-one training and support for all who need it.
The industry is moving in the direction of complete documentation and RepairDoc technology is based on blockchain technology principles. This means that smart process documentation will soon be the standard that insurers and consumers look for. The certified repair is not a one-size-fits all approach. Customers get placed in the driver’s seat and can select “Authenticity”, “Compliance” or “Certified Repair” Certificates.

At Rick’s Paint and Body, collision repair is a family affair. Assured Performance was able to connect with owners, Katie and Tyler Smith, and discuss their Augusta, Georgia based Certified body shop. Forefront on their minds was how they maximize their shop’s Certifications and prioritize using the best tools and technologies. Their emphasis on high quality, safe repairs allows their shop to provide each customer with excellent service. Processing an impressive number of vehicles each month, the secret of their success may be tied to a motto that their shop management considers foundational— provide every employee with an enjoyable, family style work environment and stay ahead of the curve!
The History of Rick’s Paint and Body
Katie Smith grew up in the Collision Care industry. In the early 1990’s, her father, Rusty Campbell, bought Rick’s Paint and Body from the original owner, Rick Huff— who had opened the shop in 1976. Her father had been employed by Rick for several years and knew the shop was something special. This torch recently passed to Katie and her husband, Tyler Smith, who purchased the shop from her father in January, 2020. Rick’s Paint and Body is Certified by Assured Performance, Nissan, INFINITI, Ford, Ford- Aluminum, Kia, Hyundai, Fiat Chrysler, GM and Subaru… with more Certifications in the works. In Katie’s words, “Our Certifications help set our shop apart from other body shops. We consistently train our front staff to educate customers about our training and the advanced tools required to fix their vehicle.”
How Rick’s Paint and Body Has Navigated Recent Changes
Running a busy, successful collision repair shop is no small venture. Rick’s Paint and Body currently employees about 48 people, most of whom have worked for the shop for over 15 years. Not only do Katie and Tyler work at the shop full-time – in addition to being parents – but Katie’s cousin Murphy is the shop’s head estimator. Meanwhile, Murphy’s teenage brother has worked at the shop since he learned how to drive and aspires to become a body technician after high school. As further proof that a love of collision care is a lifelong journey, Katie’s father still participates in the shop and her mother handles payroll.
Being a family oriented business means that Rick’s Paint and Body cares for their customers’ vehicles the same way that they would want their own repaired. “We treat every person like a member of the family. After all, no one plans on getting into an accident!” This standard has helped the shop bring in new business through social media platforms, word of mouth, and insurance referrals. “We run a local commercial and advertise in two magazines.” Not surprisingly, their marketing advertisements announce that they are their community’s “Local Certified Choice”.
Katie elaborates, “We also launched the Assured Performance Economic Booster Program at the beginning of April and WOW! It could not have come at a better time. Tyler and I also attended Assured Performance’s conference at Disney, in 2018 and 2019. Each time, we walked away with valuable information.”
While COVID-19 changed their shop operations for the short term, Katie believes that the changes they’ve implemented will help them in the future. “We have spent a small fortune on cleaning supplies to help keep our staff and customers safe. We even had our front window painted with directions for customers to stay inside their vehicle and call us, so a Rick’s representative could provide curbside vehicle service. We also offer a pickup and delivery option for repairs.”
To Katie, the important lesson is that these sanitary precautions are a good practice for everyone, “We all know a person’s vehicle is a ‘germ paradise’, so we now take an extra few minutes to wipe everything down and apply disinfectant.” Katie feels that all shops should continue to ensure this high level of safety, through a detailed cleaning protocol, “We will continue to use seat, steering wheel, handle, and gear shift covers along with applying a disinfectant spray.”
Despite how seamlessly Rick’s Paint and Body implemented these changes, Katie and Tyler admit that they miss one thing— face-to-face interaction with the community members they’ve grown to know so well. However, their hard work has paid off. “Our customers have been extremely grateful for the extra measures we’ve taken and everyone has complimented our curbside service.”
Going forward, Katie sees her shop continuing to grow and evolve in their approach. “There’s one motto that my dad drilled into my head since before I was born… When you start a project, never stop until it is done, big or small. That advice is true in all aspects of life and Tyler and I teach our two boys the same thing.”
Katie is looking forward to her shop receiving ongoing Certifications and is even considering offering customers Certified Repairs, “Any time you can give someone a piece of paper that says ‘Certified” I feel like it makes them feel good… as they know they made the right choice.”
For collision repair shops that are just starting the Certification process, Katie’s advice is simple, “Since each manufacturer has their own required tools and training requirements, the easiest way to obtain and maintain our Certifications is through a binder for each Manufacturer, with everything labelled. When auditors arrive, they really appreciate that we have everything in one place and aren’t scrambling to find numbers or scans.”
Rick’s Paint and Body keeps their team empowered with weekly meetings, file audits, and ongoing staff training. In Katie’s words, “Inspect what you expect!”

Differentiate Your Business with the Certified Repair Option
Put yourself into the mind of your customers. They place their trust in your collision repair shop and technicians. They select your facility for its Certifications, staff, and community reputation.
However, many drivers still believe that all repairs are created equal and that isn’t the case. How can you stand out from the competition and showcase your shop’s superior service, excellent safety protocols, and use of Manufacturer’s parts?
Introducing: The Certified Repair Option (CRO). A “Best Practice” method of repairing today’s sophisticated vehicles!
The ability to offer customers the option of a Certified Repair is an important way to educate them about your body shop’s high standards. By offering the Certified Repair Option (CRO) to your customers, you differentiate your collision center from shops that cut corners or use aftermarket or salvage parts. This allows you to articulate, to consumers, exactly why choosing a Certified Repair is the best option.
Already included in your Assured Performance Network membership, Certified Repairs provide consumers with a printed certificate for every completed repair. This Certificate verifies that each repair was completed in compliance with the Manufacturer’s specifications and procedures. To customers, this means security and peace of mind. For Certified body shops, this means happy, return clients and a “best practice” approach. While the average customer won’t know the ins and outs of the repair process – in the same way that a collision repair shop or technician does – they appreciate a Certified Repair and the proof-based system behind it.
The payoff for shops that use this technology is immense. The quality repairs that you perform will enhance consumer confidence and allow your body shop to stand out and process more repairs! As a busy shop owner, it is nice to know that your technician’s hard work and qualifications are documented, saved, and attached by VIN for the lifetime of the vehicle.
Certified Repairs give you the ability to declare a new level of authority over the repair process.
The industry is moving in the direction of complete documentation. Smart process documentation will soon be the standard that the industry looks for. Certified Repairs place your customers back in the driver’s seat and allow them to select “Authenticity”, “Compliance” or “Certified Repair” Certificates from your Assured Performance Certified Collision Center!

Industry News! ShopOps— Tip of the Month
In addition to being a Certified shop and having personalized support for your shop management, another great benefit of Assured Performance membership is having access to ShopOps. We connected with Melissa Skoog, one of our Regional Directors, to find out her ShopOps: Tip of the Month.
It turns out that Industry News was first and foremost on her mind!
Melissa Skoog: Assured Performance Regional Director
Why ShopOps Should Be Your Destination for Industry News:
As Melissa connects with hundreds of dealerships in our Network, monthly, she recommends that they all add “ShopOps” to their reading list. She explains, “It’s so important to stay up-to-date with the industry but it can be hard to find key news all in one place. ShopOps: Industry News is the most convenient way to find out the latest information.” The feedback she receives from dealerships is relief. “It’s nice for them to have a user-friendly way to read important Industry News.”
Melissa has worked within the automotive industry for over 5 years, as both a Business Analyst integrating software with Insurance Carriers and as an Account Coordinator managing MSOs. Being an Assured Performance Regional Director allows her to interact directly with shops and dealerships to see direct results and benefits. As for her personal favorite ShopOps tool, it’s the “Marketing” tab. She lets shops know how to download and use the logos that showcase and promote their Certifications online.
How to Access Industry News from ShopOps!
1. Go to the Assured Performance website and login to access ShopOps.
2. You will see the Dashboard tab. Select “Overview”.
3. Review “Industry News”.

Employee Spotlight of the Month: Brent Henkle, Regional Director!
We often recommend that our Assured Performance Certified Shops stay in touch with their Regional Director. Brent Henkle is one example of why doing so is helpful. While Brent is new to Assured Performance, as of January 2020, he has already become a standout member of our team. In recognition of the work he does providing ShopOps tutorials and support, Certified Repair (CRO) training, and helping his region with all-around shop management, he is our Assured Performance Team Member of the month!
Brent Henkle, Assured Performance Regional Director
It is easy to recognize why Brent Henkle is so effective at his position as a Regional Director—He cares and he isn’t afraid to show it. This proactive energy boils down to his personal mantra, “Work hard, work smart”. He credits this positive attitude to his experience and passion for the collision care industry. He defines “work hard, work smart” as a strategy to provide shop owners with the tools they need to become successful… without becoming exhausted. “I believe that shop owners can attain their goals without needing to work overtime to earn a living.”
Work Hard, Work Smart:
We asked Brent to explain this philosophy in more detail, “I don’t send people down the rabbit hole— I let shops know exactly what work we can do together. I make sure each shop is meeting their goals and headed in the right direction. I also make sure that the individuals or shops I’m working with are comfortable and happy with our progress.”
Brent formulated these successful time management skills while he was the Director of HR, Information Management, and Operations at Price’s Collision in Tennessee and Kentucky. The business had 10 shops in the Greater Nashville area. The shops were independently owned and he worked directly with the owner, Bobby Price. Even then, Brent didn’t let his title hold him back from being hands-on. “If I needed to… I stepped up as the Manager or CSR and would paint walls or fix toilets. Whether a task was mental or physical, I wanted it completed to the best of my ability. The role gave me the opportunity to be cerebral but complete any physical work that would help the team”.
Brent’s attitude – and the work culture he helped to create – led the shop to switch from 50% employee retention to 90%. Payment was based on skill level and what each technician could bring to the table, rather than a template approach. This allowed employees to rise in their title and responsibilities, quickly, without the need to hire from the outside.
He first heard of the Assured Performance Network when he was still at Price’s.
“We were working on our certifications and I liked that we could get so many certifications through one distinguished 3rd party. The signage and logos that Assured Performance offered were a big part of my interest. I helped the shops complete their certifications and enjoyed the great team at Assured Performance, as well good inspectors. We always knew what to expect and appreciated the great communication we received. The certifications we received laid the foundation for our shops to repair cars the way a manufacturer requires and how we would want our own vehicle repaired.”
The certifications were also a hit with customers, “We had a wall by the Customer Service Representative’s counter. Many customers would ask us about certification and the manufacturers. We would discuss the technicians we hired and our equipment and procedures.”
Brent’s role at Price’s ended when his mentor, Bobby Price, passed away. Brent still credits Bobby (and the great teams he put together) for the growth and development he had in the collision care industry. He remains thankful for the knowledge and work ethic he learned at Price’s Collision.
His Advice to Shops Wanting to Develop a Winning Strategy:
1. Find 5 positive things about each person you interact with.
2. Continue to try new things and challenge yourself.
3. Track performance— Regularly review the results of any new tools, techniques, or systems you try.
4. A team strategy is a winning strategy. Similar to hockey or soccer, it’s hard to be successful when you aim to make a goal alone… work as a team!
5. Look at challenges as opportunities for improvement.
6. Give credit where credit is due and put yourself in another person’s shoes.
Brent still lives in Nashville, Tennessee with his wife of 31 years, Suzanne— he drives a Jeep and she drives a Hyundai. Together, they share an adult son, Josh, who was a college baseball player, AP student, and went through a body technician apprenticeship to work as a body technician. When Brent isn’t working and connecting with Assured Performance shops, he spends his spare time coaching girl’s volleyball and enjoys snowboarding, skiing, fishing, hiking, and golf. In additional to his many role’s at Price’s Collision, he worked for CCC, as a Regional Account Manager, and in GM Dealer Training, Sales, Service and Marketing, and Service Parts Engineering.

If you hear the term “Virtual Tour” and think of real estate, it is time to make the term synonymous with Collision Centers. In a world that is increasingly digital, virtual tours can enhance your business by providing prospective clients with an insider’s view of your collision center and the comfort of a peak behind the scenes. We reviewed several of our Assured Performance Certified Body Shops that have virtual tours and these are the takeaways!
First, What is a Virtual Tour? While virtual tours are typically a simulation of an existing location that allows the viewer to navigate a series of photos or a 360 degree view, there are multiple methods used to achieve this effect. Do it yourself (DIY) methods can be completed using your smartphone or the help of a cameraperson or employee; while popular options include video tours, walkthrough tours, still photo slideshows, and more.
How to Incorporate a Virtual Tour onto Your Website! Virtual video and photo tours are on the rise because consumers are opting for virtual services like never before. Instead of picking up their phone or driving to your body shop, a potential customer might navigate your website and complete a virtual estimate and service, without ever meeting you face-to-face. As customers grow used to upgraded smart technology based interactions – and body shops recognize the monetary savings that these tools allow – it is safe to say that we have entered a new era in digital service.
1. Start with what you have.
If you have a great camera, use that. If you have a friend who believes they’re the next Martin Scorsese, invite them to help. Hire a professional if you want the end product to be a guaranteed success. You can also experiment recording footage with your smartphone’s video recording features and a tripod. Focus on helpful videos or tutorials— everything from how to install a carseat to crash test dummy safety tips. Mundy’s Collision Center & Auto Repair in Lawrenceville, Georgia used their virtual tour as an opportunity to discuss their philosophy on prioritizing each customer, Certification standards, and making sure each vehicle is repaired to pre-loss condition.
2. Highlight the best your shop has to offer.
If you have a wonderful entry or service area, start there. If you want to showcase a panoramic shot of your shopfront, incorporate that onto your website. Other shops, like Davis Paint and Collision Auto Center in Oklahoma opted to show their technicians hard at work cleaning each vehicle.
Meanwhile, Daya’s Certified Collision Center in Orlando, Florida uses a combination of photography and virtual video tours— these allows customers to see a realistic view of hands-on certified collision repairs.
3. See Your Body Shop From a New Perspective.
An aerial view of your body shop can also be helpful and eye-catching. Use a drone to capture this type of footage and give customers a bird’s eye view of the enormity of your center. That’s exactly what K & M Collision did to allow customers to see an unexpected visual aid for their business. They also interviewed management and showed day-to-day operations.
4. Let Customers Get to Know You.
Consider filming a brief introductory video that includes the owner or manager of your body shop welcoming your online customers. A virtual walkthrough tour, by the manager and/or owner, can be a great way to welcome prospective customers to your shop, especially if they book service online. Collision Specialists, Inc. in Jackson Tennessee, used a professional spokesperson approach.
5. Make the virtual tour accessible.
Don’t hide the virtual tour on a web page customers may not click on. East Texas Collision Repair is a great example of incorporating the visual nature of a virtual tour onto their website’s homepage. Doing so allows customers to feel as though your shop is familiar, before they even step through the doors.
6. Start with photos.
If a video tour is beyond your capacity at the moment, start with photo examples of each aspect of your business. Dalton Collision in Knoxville, Tennessee uses photographs to show each aspect of the repair journey.
Have you considered having a virtual tools on your website, to help your shop stand out from the competition? How have you responded to consumers who request virtual phone estimates? To learn more about leveraging the tools already available to you in ShopOps as a Certified shop, our Assured Performance Regional Directors are available to personally walk you through any questions you have and help you with all aspects of your shop management. Your Regional Director has extensive experience with shop management. Email or call us today and we will provide you with a warm introduction. (949) 221-0010.
Gain Recognition for the Quality Repairs You Offer: The CRO
The future is closer than you realize and we want you to be prepared for it. Today’s vehicles have more in common with computers than the cars of the past. Each specially designed vehicle your body shop repairs requires a significant amount of tools, training, and equipment to be repaired correctly. Every time you opt for original manufacturer’s parts or complete pre and post scan diagnostics on a vehicle, you are performing steps that would constitute a Certified Repair and produce a Certificate for your customers. You deserve to be recognized for the quality work your body shop performs and your customers want that reassurance about the repairs performed on their vehicle.
Are you offering a Certified Repair to your customers?
If your answer is “No, “Not yet” or “I’m thinking about it”… this is what you need to know about the future of repairs!
Consumers like to get repairs from Certified Shops. It’s a standard that not many shops reach and it represents excellence. For that same reason, when consumers are offered the option of a Certified Repair, they prefer it. This is because the Certified Repair Option is fully documented and connected to their VIN for the lifetime of their vehicle. For the technician, it’s easy— they download RepairDOC— a user-friendly mobile app found in Google Play or the App Store. To the customer, the fact that their collision center of choice is using technology based on blockchain technology principles and offering one-of-a-kind collision repair documentation is top-of-the-line. The same reason your body shop opted to become an Assured Performance Certified Collision Center is the same reason why you should take advantage of your free access to the Certified Repair Option.
Why body shops shop are choosing the CRO:
Using Assured Performance’s exclusive technology – offered to all Collision Repair Providers in their Network – has the following benefits!
FACT: Collision shops that offer a Certified Repair have a final, verifiable documented record of exactly how each vehicle was repaired. This information is VIN-Linked, web-housed, and blockchain validated.
FACT: All Certified Repair Option supporting platforms are open architecture for flexible connectivity and integration with existing and legacy infrastructures.
FACT: A final receipt of the work performed offers unparalleled benefits for all parties involved- vehicle owner and body shop
The industry is moving in the direction of the complete documentation found in a Certified Repair. This documentation will soon be the standard that consumers and insurers look for. Customers get placed in the driver’s seat and can select “Authenticity”, “Compliance” or “Certified Repair” Certificates.
Want to get started and have questions? Use of RepairDoc is easy to adapt into your current practice and our Assured Performance Regional Directors are available for personalized one-on-one training and support for all who need it .

How Frank’s Accurate Body Shop is Giving Back to the Community & Prioritizing Their Customers!
What do you do when times get tough? For Frank’s Accurate Body Shop, that answer comes easy— help others.
Assured Performance recently had the opportunity to connect with Frank Rinaudo, owner and operator of Frank’s Accurate Body Shop in Slidell, Louisiana, just outside of New Orleans. We wanted to find out two things: First, how has his business risen above the fluctuations of the last few months and, second, how has his belief in helping others benefited his community?
About Frank’s Accurate Body Shop:
For many people in the collision care industry, cars are a passion from an early age. Even when Frank was young, he knew he loved everything related to cars. That passion turned into a hobby when he was a teenager and he began repairing cars in his parent’s garage. It made sense to turn that passion into a career and he spent many years working as a body and paint technician. In 1990, he and his wife, Sandy Rinaudo, bought their shop and it has grown and thrived ever since. On an average month they process approximately 70 cars and have 15 full time employees. Since COVID-19 made its mark, business has slowed to half of its normal rate— but that hasn’t stopped Frank and his wife from doing everything they can to help their community and demonstrate great customer care. These techniques have allowed their business to stay ahead of the curve.
The Steps They Have Taken Since COVID-19 & How They Give Back:
Frank’s personal philosophy is to “always strive for perfection and settle for excellence”. This quest for excellence is evident in every repair performed at his shop and was a motivator for Frank’s Accurate Body Shop to attain Assured Performance certification, along with being a certified by Fiat Chrysler, Nissan, INFINITI, Repair Capable Ford and Repair Capable Aluminum. Frank’s body shop is also Tesla Factory Trained & Approved. The difference between his shop and others, he believes, is their culture and process. They keep their staff lean and each member of the team is actively involved in making sure every repair meets the same high standards.
When the pandemic stuck, Frank began to see the need his community had for someone to help. He stepped up to buy hundreds of dollars in gift cards from local restaurants, including The Salad Station, The Wine Market, Speckled T’s, Counter Culture, and Southside Cafe. He wanted to help restaurant owners and donated the gift cards to the radio station, The Lake 94.7.
Meanwhile, Frank says, “We are currently running at about 50% of our normal volume of work but holding strong. While we had already been using photo estimating, we are now promoting it and making use of Docusign— so all forms can be signed electronically. Before each repair we sanitize and disinfect each car’s interior with leather and plastic safe disinfectant and we repeat this process, along with cleaning the outside of each vehicle, after we complete service.”
One highlight for Frank came last year, when his shop participated in “Recycled Rides”. He explains, “At a Business Council meeting, a man named Mike Anderson challenged us to recycle one vehicle for a deserving member of the community. I was proud to participate. Just before Thanksgiving (2019) we were able to locate all required parts and complete paperwork on a vehicle for a single mother with 4 children. She held down 2 jobs, just to support her family. Her car’s transmission had gone out and was not repairable.”
The gifting of the vehicle is something he will never forget, “She was so grateful and overwhelmed by the moment that she broke down in tears. About a week later, she stopped by with all 4 of her children so they could thank us as well.”
In addition to COVID-19 gift card giveaways and NABC’s Recycled Rides, Frank’s shop has hosted F.R.E.E. (First Responder Emergency Extrication) and aided Habitat for Humanity… all while being a destination body shop.

Good News Story: Collision Specialists Inc., Jackson Tennessee
Our mission at Assured Performance is to recognize and certify the top body shops in North America and Canada. We do this through a comprehensive, proof-based inspection and certification process, which recognizes specific body shops as certified to repair leading Manufacturers. We also offer the Certified Repair Option (CRO)— with the RepairDOC* tool (*patent pending), Business Capability Assessment deficiency analysis and reporting, a Quality Management System, and cloud data safeguard with storage backed by blockchain technology principles. While there are many standout collision shops within our Assured Performance Network, our goal is to recognize leaders within each community.
Collision Specialists, Inc. in Jackson, Tennessee isone of those premier body shops. Opened in 1989 and owned by Steve Hardee, Steve envisioned creating a shop that would exceed each customer’s needs and incorporate a great experience during a “time of inconvenience”. His next goal? To create and maintain a clean and profitable business for his staff and technicians. Hardee has met his goals— his shop employs around 25 team members and repairs anywhere from 100 to 125 vehicles a month. Located about 50 miles outside of Memphis, Tennessee, Collision Specialists, Inc. is known as a destination location for collision care work on new and luxury domestic and European automobiles, including trucks. Their collision shop is Certified by Assured Performance, Fiat Chrysler, Nissan, INFINITI, and Hyundai.
Assured Performance had the opportunity to connect directly with Josh Smith, the Operations Manager at Collision Specialists, Inc.Josh explained that he has been working for the collision shop over an 11 year period, much of that time as an estimator. “Here at Collision Specialists, Inc., we really feel that we have the best and most qualified employees. All our repair technicians are I-CAR Gold Class Certified. Our shop constantly strives to have the best possible tools (scanners, spot welders, specialty frame equipment, aluminum repair, etc.) and technology to repair the vehicles.” In addition to their many OEM Certifications, some of the Assured Performance smart technology tools that the shop prioritizes are RepairDOC and the Certified Repair Option (CRO). Josh spoke about RepairDOC and how the shop and technicians have responded to incorporating this revolutionary new technology. “We have been using RepairDOC for one month. We typically use it on structural repairs, but I have used it for detailed teardown documentation and mechanical repairs too. You can use it on something as simple as a bumper replacement, if you want to.”
For the training process, Josh worked 1-on-1 with each employee and found that the shop’s technicians responded well to the addition. Josh gave praise to his Assured Performance Regional Director, Brent Henkle for making the process “seamless”.
Within a day or two, he had the “hang of it” and the technicians also “liked it”. “They were already taking photos in CCC so it’s not really any different. They can now complete their lines and the quality control checklist and they are finished. The dockets in RepairDOC are customized for each technician, so the tech will only see files that are assigned to them.” Josh estimates that they have already used it on 20 repairs within the first month, with many more Certified Repairs to come. Another benefit, “It’s simple and requires less time than running around the shop putting documents on the dash. The techs can do everything from the RepairDOC app on their phone!”
As for the biggest gain for the shop, technicians, and consumers, Josh talks about his own personal experience and integrity.
“I would say the biggest advantage to using RepairDOC is the fact that I can go to sleep at night and know that it (a vehicle) was repaired the right way.” He further explains, “We all know that one of the worst things that can happen is for your repair work to be questioned.” For Josh, RepairDOC and the Certified Repair “simplify that, as all the information you need is in one file.”
Another added benefit, Josh explained, is his ability to “know that the information gathered is safe… even years down the road.” Josh says that while their own business now has the benefit of feeling confident that each technician repaired the vehicle correctly, they are also able to see “live data” for each stage of the repair.
How have consumers responded? According to his experience, “The certificates for the repairs that we have documented are very professional” and consumers like having that certification. In a time of adjustment for many body shops, Josh remains steadfast and optimistic. Their shop is as busy as ever, with most of their customers finding them through the shops’ positive reputation and “word of mouth”. They are also upgrading their website with consumer-oriented automated options. Josh explained why Collision Specialists, Inc. believes certification is imperative, “We feel that the industry is going in the direction of OEM Certifications and we want to do the best repair with the most current information possible.”
Josh’s advice to body shops that are new to using RepairDOC for the Certified Repair Option is, “To just dive in and do it. The industry is headed this way. The insurance companies and customers will appreciate a company that has been using this even before it is required. This is the right way to document a repair.”
