Good News Story of the Month: Andy’s Auto Body Collision Repair
Good News Story of the Month: Andy’s Auto Body Collision Repair
Pictured are, from left: Chase Stewart, Andrew Powell, Andy Powell, owner, William Drlinger, Jerry Wall, & Bryce Gates
This month, we connected with Andy and Michelle Powell, the owner of Andy’s Auto Body Collision Repair, in Vandalia, Illinois, a Collision Center that has been open for almost 23 years! With a new baby and a new dream, the couple decided to take a leap of faith and start repairing vehicles in a shed outside their home. It started out with old vehicle restorations as Andy’s name started to get around. It was then that he decided to leave his job and start his own business with Michelle and their new baby by his side. They opened February 14th, 2000 in Brownstown, Illinois, which was the first newly constructed business in 31 years. Knowing that their business was gaining momentum, their confidence was high. Today they’ve grown to repair 40-50 cars per month while earning certifications such as Assured Performance, FCA, Nissan, Hyundai, Kia, and more. Stay tuned to learn why their decision to become a part of the Certified Repair Network has helped navigate their Collision Center toward greater success!
In 2018 Andy and Michelle decided to move their business to Vandalia, Illinois just west of Brownstown. With most of their business coming from this area, they either needed to build onto their business in Brownstown for a second time, or move to a new location. So that’s exactly what they did. There, they’ve grown to become the most popular Certified Repair Center in town with a waiting list of about 4 months. People don’t seem to mind though, because when they bring their vehicle to Andy’s Auto Body, they know their time and money will be worth the manufacturer specific Certified Repair and a family-like customer service they won’t receive anywhere else. Michelle tells us that “Cars don’t leave the shop without Andy’s seal of approval, because the car has his name on it and He wants it done right!”
With 7 total employees, Michelle and Andy being 2 of them, and with their own son as their painter, this family business has surely made a name for itself in this small town and has defined the term “quality service.” While the crew here works hard to set a high standard for their customers, Andy himself works harder. Instead of sitting behind a desk while observing his employees, he’s in the garage getting his hands dirty helping to repair every vehicle himself, so they’re up to his standards! “Over 20 years of doing things right. You have to do good by the customer and put them in a safely repaired vehicle. A simple job isn’t even simple when we follow particular procedures 50-60 pages long,” says Andy.
Keeping in mind that only 5% of body shops in North America have what it takes to become Assured Performance Certified, this Collision Center has worked day and night to become a 5-Star business. While being committed to a life of distinction, Andy’s Auto Body Collision Repair is constantly upgrading equipment while Andy brushes up on every new technique he can get his hands on. Taking I-CAR tests in his spare time, he prides himself on owning the best Collision Center in town. Michelle tells us that their “customers are the reason.” Confident that they have the highest education they can get in repairing vehicles the correct way, their customers know they will drive off with their family’s safety secured.
While Andy’s Auto Body Collision Repair is mostly known by word of mouth, they also run a local radio ad 2 times a day, along with Facebook ads, and full pages in the local newspaper.
With quality at the forefront, this family-owned business has its eyes set on the prize. Educating the public on the importance of a proper repair is one of the many things Andy’s Auto Body Collision Repair is passionate about. Powell has raised the bar of excellence when it comes to quality service, customer care, and giving his customers the peace of mind in knowing their vehicle is in the right hands. With the Assured Performance stamp of approval, Andy’s Auto Body Collision Repair has become a proud part of the Certified Repair Network.
If you live near Vandalia, Illinois, be sure to stop by Andy’s Auto Body Collision Repair, meet Michelle and Andy Powell and his amazing team and get a fully documented Certified Repair by Andy himself. You will be certain that your repair prioritizes the use of quality parts and manufacturer’s repair procedures.

Let’s set the record straight on a few myths that might be holding you up from moving forward with collision repair certification!
Have you thought about becoming a Certified Repair Provider and just can’t justify it? There are a few myths out there that may be preventing you from making the commitment to gaining certification for your shop. It’s important to know that these are just myths and falsehoods that are inaccurate and should no longer prevent you from gaining collision certification for your shop.
Certification is beneficial for both your shop and your customers, making it a significant advantage for your business. Here are a few of the most common myths – or excuses – shop owners use when explaining why they are not interested in certification and, more importantly, why these reasons are not valid or, even worse, holding your business back.
#1. The “I Don’t Need Certification Because I Know What I’m Doing” Myth
The biggest body shop certification myth out there can be summed up by this quote we hear all the time: “I already know what I’m doing. I don’t need this.” While you – and many shops like yours – have the knowledge and the capabilities to fix the cars that stop by your shop, vehicles nowadays are build with high-tech features, advanced systems, and innovative technology that require precise and accurate repairs – this, certainly, comes as no surprise to you.
But by understanding this reality, it’s a clear reason why you need to be certified to fix new equipment on sophisticated vehicles. This can change the way you run your body shop and interact with your customers… for the better. OEM Certification means you are one of the first to have access to OEM repair procedures that give you proof and justification for every repair your body shop conducts. You can also conveniently view the repair procedures that your technicians need to properly repair every vehicle to the manufacturer’s specifications.
This gives your shop the support of the leading manufacturers and backing for every repair, especially when you offer a fully documented certified repair and you are able to electronically document the repair process and provide authenticity, compliance, and a Certified Repair Certificate to every customer and for every repair.
#2. The “My Customer Already Trusts Me” Myth
In business, one of (if not the most) important relationships is the one with your customers. And we know how hard you have to work to gain your customers’ trust and confidence. That’s why shops often tell us, “my customer already trusts me, this won’t make a difference.” While we don’t doubt that your customers trust you and value your expertise, you still have a lot to gain from certification!
You are right – you already have your customer’s trust, but certification opens the door for you to broaden your service abilities to include every new and more sophisticated vehicle that needs a repair. Put yourself in the customer’s shoes – when you offer a fully documented Certified Repair, you can promote the new levels of service (and trust!) that you are providing your customers, giving them confidence in knowing that they are experiencing the best possible collision repair outcomes available.
A fully documented Certified Repair puts the customer’s mind at ease, knowing that they are receiving high-quality collision care from your body shop. This also means they can share this experience with potential customers, like their friends and family! It is true, of course, that you have earned the trust and confidence of your existing customers. However, new customers, the ones who have never interacted with you or your shop, will see your certification as a selling point and this could even be the reason they choose to work with you.
This is further support for why earning certified collision care recognition is an important decision that you can make for your repair business.
#3. The “My Repairs Are Already Perfectly Fine” Myth
When you decide to move forward with a collision care certification, you’re not – we repeat, you’re NOT – acknowledging some shortcomings or problem. In fact, you’re doing the opposite: you’re promoting your services as being validated by an objective, outside source, an industry leader who is confirming your top-notch service. That said, it’s not unusual for shops to tell us that they don’t need to be certified because “the quality of my repairs are perfectly fine and I haven’t had any complaints yet.”
When you become an official Certified Collision Repair provider, however, you can dramatically improve your quality control process even if you already conduct high-caliber repairs. Once your shop is certified, your team of properly trained technicians will be able to view the manufacturer’s repair procedures from their RepairDOC Technician smart app and document every aspect of the repair, including quality parts use, safety scans and calibrations, use of approved paint systems, and more!
This allows your shop to access all the information it needs and helps eliminate inefficient processes that result in a pure loss of time and money. Plus, you’ll be able to take full advantage of exclusive partnerships and buying opportunities that are provided to certified collision repair facilities while also being the first to learn about value added offers, rebates, and discounts from leading services that will help to elevate your business over your competitors.
As we said earlier, getting a certification isn’t a sign of failure or that you’re producing inferior work – that’s not the case at all! Certification should be considered part of your business growth process and commitment to providing the best service to your customers. Think of certification as a way to distinguish your shop from the others and a way to promote your services to your customers.
Bonus benefits!
When you make the decision to take your business to the next level by pursuing collision repair certification, look for programs that help you market your newly certified shop in ways that maybe you haven’t tried before. Some of the available programs can help you create detailed and essential short- and/or long-term marketing plans that, when paired with your existing word of mouth advertising and your stellar reputation, can keep your customers coming back. The right certified collision care program can also help you create: a press release, ready-to-use social media posts, flyers, brochures, and postcard mailers.
What’s more, if the idea of developing a digital (online) strategy for your collision repair facility sounds extremely scary, there’s good news! Certain programs can even help you understand what your customers are looking for and work to get your shop’s website picked up by the search engines, placing your business right where your customers are looking.
Certification myths debunked (hopefully)
By debunking the existing myths that often prevent shops from moving forward with certification, our hope is that your shop sees certification as a way to expand its services and solutions to customers. When you decide to move forward and move your business where it needs to be by becoming a certified collision shop, you’ll prove to the leading manufacturers, your customers (both current and future), and even yourself that you have the right tools, training, and equipment to meet or surpass the rigorous standards set forth by a nonprofit organization’s independent inspection process. This will give you the prestige of being known as a certified repair provider and create even more opportunities for your shop.

Tips to Running a Successful Body Shop
We recently chatted with the Technical Compliance Director at Assured Performance, and 3rd generation shop manager, owner, and operator, Patrick Porter in Southwest Mississippi. He opened up about what it takes to run a successful business and shared insightful tips and tricks in training your staff, everyday life in the body shop, and your outlook on your business strategy.
The number one tip in your succession is motivation. It’s a steep cliff that needs to be addressed in the collision repair industry. Finding skilled and willing-to-learn technicians has never been more important. The skills required of modern technicians are advanced and complicated.
“The first step in workplace motivation and recruiting is making sure that you understand that you are always selling your service no matter what.” – Porter
Having a standard for your shop, technicians, and even the work you do is going to make or break your business. Staying motivated to make sure every repair and every employee is the best they can be will be the difference in your customer’s decision to return to your shop.
You have an obligation to your customers and the industry. You can’t stop fighting to do what’s right to get your customers the best repair you can offer them. When a customer brings their vehicle into your shop, you as professionals have an obligation to repair their vehicle to manufacturer specifications.
“The many changes and advancements we have seen in the past ten years have really turned our industry upside down and sideways to the point that if you’re not keeping up with everything, the train is going to leave the station without you and you will be irrelevant.” -Porter
Being Certified is a huge step in making sure you’re keeping up with industry standards and demands. Manufacturers give you first dibs on the latest information so you can stay updated with the latest technology and have access to proper tools and guides so you can repair their vehicles properly.
Fortitude is required to ensure competitive strength. Shops now are facing decline in revenue. Take this time to get the little projects done that you’ve been putting off. Take this time to make the necessary changes you need to take your business to the next level. Don’t waste the precious time you have waiting for customers to show up at your door. Take advantage of the cards you’ve been dealt. You can even make this time about having an online interaction with your customers and taking your online presence up a notch.
“Fortitude is a trait that we need to possess to keep our businesses open, and we need to continue to do everything we can to pursue excellence for our industry.” – Porter
Financial health and stability is a key factor in the success of your business. Every month you should be meeting with someone who focuses solely on your business’s financials. If that’s not an option for you, you may want to think about a business or financial class to better understand the needs of your own company.
“Your financial statements are your keys to success and making sure you know what decisions you need to make. The financial statements are the key to your business’s health and keeping you on the road to proper (financial) health.” – Porter
Working with like-minded people and having a group you can lean on who understand your work ethic and goals is a great way to improve the financial health of your company. This is the back-bone of your success and can be a defining factor in keeping your repair shop successful.

This new certification guarantees that collision repairs will be performed according to the manufacturer’s repair protocol by a properly trained and qualified technician, using the correct tools and equipment for the job. This certification was provided by Assured Performance Collision Care of Aliso Viejo, California, a nonprofit consumer advocacy organization that promotes automotive safety within the collision care industry.
The new certifications for North Texas Collision Center come with industry recognition by the top automotive manufacturers including Assured Performance, FCA, Hyundai, and Kia. North Texas Collision Center is now an integral part of the most advanced Certified Repair Capable and efficient Collision Care Network in the world.
According to North Texas Collision Center CEO, Edward Pena, “We are thrilled to have achieved this new certification and official industry recognition. This certification further underscores the high standards of safety we maintain for our customers.”
The automotive collision repair certification process is rigorous; less than 5% of all body shops in the U.S. are able to meet the stringent requirements imposed by the manufacturers to ensure quality and safety in their repairs.
“Newer vehicles are manufactured with durable, lightweight materials and advanced technology, which means that a repair performed in accordance to the manufacturer’s specifications is more important than ever and ensures the safety and proper performance of the vehicle,” explained Jason Coggeshall, Director of Operations for Assured Performance Collision Care. “Consumers need the confidence and peace of mind to know their vehicle is being repaired by a shop that has what it takes to ensure vehicle safety. We have certified more than 3,000 Certified Repair Providers across the country to make sure consumers can have their vehicle repaired by a Certified Repair Provider wherever they live, work, or travel.”
About Assured Performance Collision Care: Collision Care (www.collisioncare.org) is a nonprofit consumer advocacy organization and internationally recognized certifying entity established as a collaborative effort to address the critical industry need. This month, we connected with Jenna Werner, the general manager of Stewart Auto Repair in Winter Haven, Florida. Opening in March, 1998, David and Donna Stewart had a new dream. With a newly empty nest, they had a vision and a plan. They opened Stewart Auto Repair and it’s grown to become one of the most loved Collision Repair Providers in central Florida. Their daughter Jenna and her husband, Jason Werner, who now help run this body shop, pride themselves on the continued growth and customer loyalty they’ve received over the years. What started out as a dream and a 4-man team, turned into a thriving Collision Center with 32 members on staff almost 24 years later.
While keeping their solid ratings and reviews on Yelp, Google, Facebook, and other platforms, this body shop has retained it’s solid reputation and family name for years. Their continued customer loyalty has made it hard for big name vehicle repair companies to start up anywhere near them. This goes to show, the staff at Stewart Auto Repair doesn’t accept the standard service, but will go above and beyond fighting for their customer’s right for a correct and safe repair. “You won’t find another group of people who care more about getting the customer what they deserve,” says Jenna.
While it slowed for a few weeks at the start of the pandemic, Stewart Auto Repair is back to servicing an average of 130 vehicles monthly. By implementing virtual estimation, they’ve been able to safely communicate with customers better than ever.
Appointed by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Body Shop Owner, David Stewart, has been a member of the Motor Vehicle Repair Advisory Council since April of 2019. As Automotive Collision Shops Representative, David’s council advises the department on situations advancing industry standards and practices that require his technical expertise and consultation. Promoting consumer protection in the motor vehicle repair industry, the owner of Stewart Auto Repair has a valued voice when it comes to making changes in the favor of Florida’s everyday vehicle owners.
Through Assured Performance, Stewart Auto Repair holds a number of certifications including FCA, Nissan, Hyundai, and Kia. Being certified is one of the highest standards this body shop holds. “If you are truly dedicated to performing correct repairs, and already have the equipment, training, and discipline required, then it’s a no-brainer going the extra step to get Certified,” states Stewart.
Jenna educates by explaining that less than 4% of Florida’s collision centers even hold OEM Certifications. While urging others to do the right thing and to take pride in the work they do, Stewart Auto Repair is a strong advocate for certified shops throughout the state of Florida.
By using CollisionLink, Stewart Auto Repair has access to tens of thousands of OEM parts, and can improve the speed and accuracy of the repair process for your own vehicle. With customer safety and satisfaction being the top priority, Stewart Auto Repair offers Fully Documented Certified repairs. Meaning, you walk away holding a document that proves they followed the Manufacturer’s technical repair procedures to give you a proper repair while retaining the value of your vehicle. Instead of leaving the shop uncertain and worried you’ll have to come back, this document is the customer’s proof of safety.
Stewart Auto Repair has been turning heads now for over 2 decades. It’s popularity stems from word of mouth and it’s stellar reputation. Their mission statement promises to “exceed customers’ expectations by delivering exceptional quality and service through honesty, integrity, and professional excellence.” You can follow along and get more information through their Facebook Page.
If you live near Winter Haven, Florida, be sure to stop by Stewart Auto Repair, meet Jenna Werner and this amazing team and get a fully documented Certified Repair by one of their well-trained technicians. You will be certain that your repair prioritizes the use of quality parts, manufacturer’s repair procedures, approved paint systems, and completed ADAS and calibrations.

Good News Story of the Month: Tri County Collision
This month, we connected with Jim Stephens, the owner of Tri County Collision in Greene, New York, a Collision Center that has been open for 31 years; 18 of which at their current location, under the name “Tri County Collision,” previously known as “B.B Collision.” We wanted to learn more about the business he took over for his father 2 years ago and how he became a Certified Repair Provider. Learn how the shop has grown, maintained a 5-star rating, and gotten Assured Performance, Nissan, Hyundai, Kia, FCA, and many more certifications. Stay tuned to learn why their decision to become a part of the Certified Repair Network has helped navigate their Collision Center toward greater success!
Taking over the body shop at the start of a global pandemic wasn’t what Jim had in mind when he took over his father’s body shop, but with the help of his faithful technicians and loyal family, the collision center has made great strides to earn a name for itself. While he knew he wanted to run a successful business that repaired vehicles correctly, using the proper repair procedures, training, tools, and equipment, they’ve also been able to keep a steady 5-star rating across many platforms including Yelp and Carwise.
Opening 31 years ago and with 11 employees on staff at Tri County Collision, this team of 12 has set the stage for quality service. Offering 17 on site rental cars, 24 hour towing, paintless dent removal, and detailing, the crew here works hard to set a high standard for their customers.
“Prior to becoming Certified, we took pride in correct repairs. Now that we are Certified, your vehicle is guaranteed to be repaired correctly. Looking up OEM repair procedures and giving the customer a document that proves their car was repaired correctly is evidence we’re the real deal,” says Jim. The advice this body shop owner gives to any other Collision Care Provider is to become certified! “New vehicle technology recommends a Certified Facility to repair your vehicle within your area, and we at Tri County Collision want to be your first choice.”
Jim’s way of thinking is that “if you know you’re already repairing the car correctly, you might as well get Certified and have documentation to prove it.” Every technician employed at Tri County Collision is trained and certified to make sure your vehicle is up to OEM standards.
Committed to the life of distinction, Tri County Collision is dedicated to upgrading equipment and technician training to keep their business in line with today’s customer and vehicle needs.
With quality at the forefront, this family-owned business has its eyes set on the prize. Educating the public on the importance of a proper repair is one of the many things Tri County Collision is passionate about. Handing a customer a printed Certificate proving their vehicle has had an OEM-approved repair is a step closer to ensuring safety and customer satisfaction. Instead of leaving the shop uncertain and worried you’ll have to come back, this document is the customer’s proof of safety.
Keeping in mind that only 5% of body shops in North America have what it takes to become Assured Performance Certified, Stephens has raised the bar of excellence when it comes to quality service, customer care, and giving his customers the peace of mind in knowing their vehicle is in the right hands.
Tri County Collision’s popularity has come from word of mouth and a long standing reputation built on 31 years of excellence. You can follow along and get more information through their Facebook Page.
If you live near Greene, New York, be sure to stop by Tri County Collision, meet Jim Stephens and his amazing team and get a fully documented Certified Repair by one of their well-trained technicians. You will be certain that your repair prioritizes the use of quality parts, manufacturer’s repair procedures, approved paint systems, and completed ADAS and calibrations.
